{Antarctic Antics}

Unit 10 took us to chilly Antarctica! Students learned about the history and characteristics of the great white continent and also studied penguins.

In week one, Kindergarten and First Grade students learned how snow forms. Then they made "Snow Paint" using shaving cream and glue. They painted Antarctic scenes to take home.

Kindergarten and first grade learned how Antarctic animals stay warm in week two. They conducted an exploration to represent the waterproof feathers of penguins. They were so surprised to see the water drops bead and roll off of their penguin.

 Second and third graders learned about glaciers in week one. They conducted a glacier simulation and saw how glaciers can move rocks and cause erosion. They students filmed time-lapse videos of their simulations.

In week two, second and third graders coded our Edison robots as Penguin Trackers. They used the EdBlocks software to program their robot to locate a penguin. Once their robot made its way to a penguin, it had to flash its lights and beep. It was tricky, but they all were successful!

In week one, fourth and fifth graders learned how to create memes using some of my favorite penguin pics. Some of them were hysterical! We also conducted an experiment to learn the effects of salt on ice. Students were challenged to pick up an ice cube using only a string. They couldn't do it until we added salt!

Week two found Mrs. Hilley getting a drone stuck in her hair!!! Fourth and fifth graders coded our new drones as Penguin Trackers.  They used the Snap! software to program their drone to locate a penguin. Once their drone landed on a penguin, it had to flash its lights. This proved to be very challenging, but a few groups were able to figure it out!
